STUDENTS PARENTS EMPLOYEES COMMUNITY

Message from Alberto M. Carvalho

As the stewards of our children’s educational futures, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has high expectations of each teacher, administrator, and all support personnel, an expectation that only excellence will be acceptable in the provision of the educational program in the coming year. We have high expectations for our community partners and parents, that they will engage with us in this educational effort, providing much needed support to our system and children. We have high demands of our legislators that they will fight to protect education funding even as the whole State struggles to adjust to a decline in revenues. We have great expectations and high demands for our students, that they will come to school each day with a willingness and desire to learn and to work hard toward obtaining the knowledge and experiences offered to them.

M-DCPS strives to maintain a culture of high expectations for all students and high demand of all teachers, parents, extended family, business, civic, and industry leaders. We all share responsibility for our children’s education based on a strong belief that learning must be the highest priority in our children's lives- they have no future without it. We must focus the attention of students on the educational substance that is critical to the community’s future, as well as their own. However, we must also teach skills beyond academics, such as communication and cultural literacy, and illustrate for our children the powerful connection between effort and achievement.

During the 2008-2009 school year, it is time to focus less on the past and to place a greater emphasis on the promise of a better future. Yes, we have great expectations for this school year, including continued improvement in reading and math and a strong focus on science education. We have high expectations for the further development of our secondary schools, to prepare students for multiple points of entry into the workforce. Each day holds a new promise, a new opportunity for success for each child, for each school and for each family. It is only by meeting these high expectations, which are based on the high demands for quality education, that together we, as a community will fulfill the promise of giving our students the world.
